Red Hook Whoopi Pie

Red Hook Lobster Pound may be better known for lobster rolls, but the whoopi pie is pretty good too.

Whoopi pies are one of those wholly American foods invented in either New England or Pennsylvania or possibly New York. They are cake like cookies filled with a thick cream — a food Oreo has tried to replicate with the far inferior Cakesters product. But the real thing can’t be replicated in a factory.

The whoopi pie was served chilled to keep the cream filling cool. At first it sort of looks like an ice cream sandwich, but without the frozen cookie and with less sweetness than ice cream.
